		<description>
Chaerin Im is an experimental filmmaker from South Korea. With the use of craftsmanship and distinctive materials, she explores gender issues and sexual imagery. By combining and experimenting with analog and digital print techniques, she makes new visual languages that challenge conventional norms of gender and sex. Her films have competed in widely-known festivals such as Annecy, Ann Arbor, Animafest Zagreb, DOK Leipzig, Vienna Shorts, Ottawa, and Slamdance. She has received multiple prestigious grants, such as GLAS, BIAF, and SBA grants. Her work was also supported by the Filmværksted Viborg and NEF Animation residency at Fontevraud. She graduated from Seoul National University’s Visual Communication Design BFA program (2017) and earned an MFA degree from the CalArts Experimental Animation MFA program (2020). Her next film in development with Miyu Productions, 'Haan',  won the Ciclic Prize in Annecy Mifa Pitches 2025.


임채린은 실험애니메이션 작업을 하는 한국 감독이며 그의 작품은 치열한 장인정신, 재료와 기법으로 성과 젠더 등의 사회적 이슈를 탐구한다. 그는 서울대학교 시각디자인과에서 학사 학위를 받고 (2017) 칼아츠 실험애니메이션 석사학위를 받았다 (2020). 그의 단편 애니메이션 "꽃" (2018), "메이트" (2019), "아이즈앤혼즈" (2021)는 안시 국제애니메이션영화제, 자그레브 국제애니메이션영화제, 오타와 국제애니메이션영화제 등 세계적인 영화제들의 경쟁 부문에 초대되었으며 신작 "나는 말이다" (2022)는 BIAF2022 한국 단편 부문 우수상을 받고 2023년 로테르담 국제영화제에 초대되었다. 현재 프랑스 스튜디오 미유 프로덕션과 기획 중인 새 작품 “한"은 2025년 안시 국제애니메이션 영화제의 Mifa 피칭 부문에서 Ciclic 상을 수상했다.

SynopsisWhere are the girls?
Unable to find girls in the diverse artwork of the Korean artist Lee Jung-seob, Chaerin Im unravels an imaginative tale of women born with half of their bodies being a horse and a tiger. These roaming women are too fierce and free to match their given role as a daughter, wife, and mother in the patriarchal society.

The tale is inspired by the Korean birth dreams, Tae-mong (태몽), of her mom when she was pregnant with her twin sister and herself.
여자 아이들은 어디로 갔을까?

이중섭의 수많은 작품들 속 여자 아이들의 부재에서 반인반호(호랑이), 반인반마(말)인 달리는 여성들의 이야기가 시작한다. 가부장제 속 여성의 역할인 딸, 아내, 그리고 엄마로만 기억되기에는 이 달리는 여성들은 너무도 자유롭고 맹렬하다.

그녀들의 이야기는 나와 내 쌍둥이, 그리고 엄마의 말과 호랑이 태몽에서 영감받았다.

Director StatementFrom time to time I wonder, “If I was born in the modern era like Lee Jung-seob, would I have been able to make art?”
And my answer would be, “Probably not.”
Like any other Korean, I have known about the artist Lee Jung-seob since I was young. We all knew him as the fauvism artist of Korea who drew a series of skeletal bulls struggling in pain throughout his lifetime. Alongside his bull paintings, his dramatic life and romantic love story made him nationally famous. But what has captivated me the most is his drawings of naked boys. The naked boys are portrayed as enjoying paradise on earth to its fullest with innocence. They are wild and free. When I watch these naked boys enjoying paradise with no shame or sadness, I wonder:
Where are the girls?
Lee Jung-seob’s artwork is brilliant and heartwarming, expressing his love and longing for his family, and being admired by everyone. But at the same time, it is appreciated by all because his status and artwork don’t question the problems and illusions behind Korean society such as the patriarchal culture and gender inequality. In that way, his work is innocent yet stereotypical, and he had the privilege to be so. Opposite to his narrative, as a Korean woman, I have always struggled with my gender in the patriarchal society. Constantly being reduced to my gender, my accomplishments and creativity were obsolete to society's standards. Discrimination and misogyny always reminded me of my Korean birth dreams, Tae-mong(태몽) of a running horse.
Tae-mong(태몽) in Korea is a dream that foretells and symbolizes the soon-to-be-born child's identity, often dreamt by the mother. Like many patriarchal cultures, the existing interpretations of birth-dreams in Korea are gender-biased and sexist. The child’s gender is predicted by the appearance and action of the animal or object in the dream which is judged to be feminine or masculine. When the dream hints at a birth of a daughter, not much is told about her talent and ambition. However, sometimes out of the blue, daughters are born after masculine dreams, like mine. In my mother’s dream, I was a roaming white horse. The horse was untamed and wild, a force of nature. Till now, I believe she represents my identity as a Korean woman most thoroughly: a free individual struggling to find a place where she belongs in this patriarchal world.
Beginning with naked boys, the film questions the exclusion of women’s voices in Lee Jung-seob’s artwork, and captures the reduction of women to patriarchal stereotypes of “daughter, wife, and mother”. Different scenes of men and women in various circumstances highlight the gender disparity of one being able to freely find love and dream, while the other is told to be silent. However, once the half horse half women appear, the given cycle is broken. No longer centered on the patriarchal perspective of a male artist, the film establishes a female-driven narrative. Acknowledging the presence of the women and minorities who lacked the privilege and circumstances to be considered extraordinary, ultimately, we ask: What does it mean to be a Korean woman?저는 때때로 ‘내가 이중섭처럼 한국 근현대사에 태어났다면 예술을 할 수 있었을까?’ 하는 생각을 합니다.그리고 그 생각에 대한 제 대답은 '아마 그렇지 못했을거야' 입니다.


여느 한국인들과 마찬가지로, 저도 어렸을 때부터 이중섭 화가에 대해 알고 있었습니다. 우리는 모두 그를 일생 동안 고통 속에서 고군분투하는 뼈만 남은 황소들을 연달아 그렸던 한국의 파비즘 아티스트로 알고 있습니다. 또한, 황소 그림들과 함께, 부자로 태어나 가난과 빈곤 속에서 생을 마감한 그의 극적인 인생과 한 여인과의 낭만적인 사랑 이야기는 그를 전국적으로 유명하게 만들었습니다. 하지만 저를 가장 사로잡은 것은 이중섭이 그린 벌거벗은 소년들의 그림입니다. 벌거벗은 소년들은 순진무구하게 지상 낙원을 마음껏 즐기는 것으로 묘사됩니다. 그들은 야생적이고 자유롭습니다. 이 벌거벗은 소년들이 수치심도 슬픔도 없이 낙원을 즐기는 것을 보면, 저는 이런 생각을 합니다.소녀들은 어디에 있을까?

이중섭의 작품은 가족에 대한 사랑과 그리움을 찬란하고 훈훈한 모습으로 표현하여 모두의 감탄을 자아냅니다. 그러나 동시에, 그의 예술작품이 가부장적 문화와 성 불평등과 같은 한국 사회의 문제들에 의문을 제기하지 않기 때문에 모든 사람에게 인정받을 수 있었습니다. 그의 작품은 순수하지만 고정 관념적이었고, 그는 남성이었기에 그럴 수 있는 특권을 가지고 있었습니다. 그러나 그와 반대로 저는 가부장제 사회 속 한국 여성으로서 저의 젠더, 사회적 성으로 인한 많은 차별과 억압을 받아왔었고 고정관념과 맞서 싸워야했습니다. 한 인간으로서 많은 성취를 하고 목표를 달성하고 창의력이 있어도 사회적 기준 속에 저는 언제나 여성이기 때문에 과소평가 되었고 제 재능과 노력은 그런 사회적 잣대 앞에서 무의미해졌습니다. 성차별과 미소지니를 맞닥뜨릴 때마다 저는 엄마가 꿈꾼 나의 태몽 속 달리는 야생마를 떠오릅니다.


한국사회에서 태몽은 장차 태어날 아이의 능력, 성격과 장래를 암시하는 경우가 많습니다. 그러나 한국의 태몽 풀이와 해석은 가부장적 문화답게 성별에 따라 극명하게 차이가 나며 성차별적인 경우가 많습니다. 이런 성차별적 꿈풀이는 아이의 성별을 태몽에 등장하는 동물이나 물건의 용모와 행동을 여성적 혹은 남성적이라 치부함으로서 결정합니다. 그리고 딸로 판단되면, 태몽은 딸아이의 용모와 결혼을 위주로 풀이되고 그의 재능과 꿈은 생략됩니다. 하지만 이런 성이분법적인 해석으로는 예측이 불가능한, 저처럼 남성적인 태몽을 가진 딸들이 가끔 태어납니다. 엄마가 꿈꾼 저의 태몽은 자유롭게 달리는 하얀 말이었습니다. 저는 길들여지지 않은 야생마였고 그 자체로 자연의 힘이었습니다. 저는 지금까지도 이 하얀 야생마가 한국 여성으로서의 저의 정체성을 잘 드러낸다고 생각합니다. 바로 가부장적 사회 속에서 자신이 속하는 곳을 찾고자 분투하는 자유로운 여성, 그 자체를 말입니다.


벌거벗은 소년들로 시작하는 단편영화 “나는 말이다"는 이중섭의 작품 속 여성의 목소리의 부재를 질문하며, 여성을 독립적인 주체가 아닌 남성에 존속하는 “딸, 아내, 그리고 어머니"로 감축하는 가부장적 사회의 단면을 포착합니다. 서로 다른 상황에 처한 여성과 남성을 묘사한 수많은 장면들은 자유롭게 사랑하고 꿈 꿀 수 있는 성과 침묵과 순종을 요구 받는 성의 불평등을 거리낌 없이 드러냅니다. 그러나 반인반마의 여성이 등장하면서 영화 속 가부장제의 순환은 깨집니다. 더 이상 남성 작가의 가부장적 관점에 속하지 않는 영화는 달리는 여성을 중심으로 주체적인 여성주의 서사를 확립합니다. 잊혀진 여성을 포함한, 인정받기 위해 필요한 특권과 환경이 없었던 사람들의 존재를 재조명하며 우리는 질문을 던집니다: 한국 여성으로 산다는 것은 무엇을 의미할까?

Director’s Statement
The inspiration came when I was going through
Picasso’s Vollard Suite, an etching series of
100 prints produced from 1930 till 1937. The artwork reflects Picasso’s erotic and artistic
obsessions through the Minotaur, a hybrid creature who is violent, cruel, and lacks control of his outbursting masculinity.
The constant depiction of the Minotaur
devouring women that appeared in the prints
gave me an unsettling curiosity about the mindset of this self-observant, confident,
yet disruptive male artist. I envied the power
and acceptance Picasso had, but at the same
time was very disturbed by the toxic masculinity
and misogyny that were so prevalent in his
artwork and love life.These contradicting feelings and thoughts evoked
by Picasso’s Vollard Suite was the driving force
behind the film Eyes and Horns. With the use of light, reflection,and shadow of the engraved
plexiglass and cyanotypes, the film goes through
the gender-shifting faces of the Minotaur, a violent
struggle between the two sexes, the transformation
of the female body, and the destruction of gender connotations. I wanted to talk about the out-dated masculinity Picasso represents, the unnamed women portrayed in numerous
artworks, and the transformation between two gender and two sexes. Ultimately, a new sexuality is born from the blurring
lines and overturn of connotations. But in the process of this discovery, we realize that numerous categories aside from the binary
classification of male and female, or men and women, have always existed, but never properly acknowledged.

Director’s Note
As an experimental filmmaker, I have always been interested in developing a new visual language. In my film ‘MATE’ I incorporated my personal interest in intaglio printmaking into film. This film uses the many different visual textures that come from the intaglio printmaking process, from the prints to the etched copper plate itself, as way to create an unfolding structure.실험 영화 작가로서, 저는 항상 새로운 시각언어를 개발하는 것에 관심이 있습니다. ‘Mate'는 평소에 작업하길 즐기는 동판화 기법에 대한 개인적인 관심을 영화에 반영한 결과물입니다. 이 영화는 찍혀나오는 판화에서부터 에칭 동판 자체에 이르기까지, 동판화 인쇄 공정에서 나오는 수많은 시각적 텍스처로 네러티브를 구성하고 이야기를 풀어나갑니다.

Director’s NoteThe contradiction between two gender and the awkwardness of dividing them has been my main concern throughout my life. Although I was born as s a female, I never had affection or interest in objects or traits that matched the ‘feminine’ category. At the same time, I never felt that I should have been a male.

This ambiguity of my gender status became the background of '꽃'. The experimental film consists of 3D sculptures with uncanny forms that resemble a penis or vagina, separate or both at the same time.
